We, as Americans, have a rich history. One of adversity, perseverance and triumph. Our values firmly grounded in liberty and personal autonomy. We proudly call our country the land of the free but are we.

We, as Americans, also have a dark history. One based in the misappropriation of land from the Native American. One based in the enslavement, of Africans and their descendants, for generations, and then subsequent Civil Rights atrocities.

It is easy to convince ourselves, that our history, is just that, history. Those events happened years ago. We have grown since then. We are better than that. Slavery began in America 400 years ago. The Emancipation Proclamation was over 150 years ago. The heart of the Civil Rights Movement, 50 years ago. Why is racial injustice still a topic of discussion?

The data regarding incarceration rates, high school graduation rates, poverty, hunger, and access to quality healthcare disproportionately impacts Black and minority communities. Furthermore, several incidences regarding allegations of police brutality and racially motivated hate crimes have caught the attention of the American consciousness.

We, as Americans are therefore at a crossroads. No longer can we turn a blind eye to injustice. It is time for us as Americans to reconcile our troubled past and truly live up to the lofty standards and values we have set for ourselves. The solution is not simple, but we can all do our part. Awareness is a start. Active involvement is the next step. Ask yourself, “What can I do to help?” A little compassion can go a long way.
